I would like to start out this update with Holiday Greetings to everyone and I want to extend my sincere hopes that everyone is able to enjoy their holidays, and that you all stay safe and healthy throughout this Christmas and New Year’s season.

Unfortunately, since the update I sent out two weeks ago on the Town’s status relative to the pandemic, the situation has deteriorated as the infection rate has continued to climb. In the last month, we have had 65 new cases and 3 deaths attributed to COVID.  Like the rest of the State, except for a few very small towns in Litchfield County, we are in the red zone and our schools have seen many COVID-19 cases.  This has necessitated that 3 classes in the Barkhamsted School were recently sent home to quarantine.  In fact, our average daily rate for COVID-19 cases is 47.5 cases normalized to 100,000 population.

The criterion for being in the red zone is 15, so we are over three times above that benchmark.

The recommended groundrules for behaviors for those in the red zone are shown in the figure below:
Here is the latest data from the CT Department of Public Health and the Farmington Valley Health District, which continues to tell the story in a very stark manner:

Compared to being vaccinated, those who are unvaccinated currently have the following relative risks:

·         5 Times higher risk of being infected with COVID-19
·         15 Times higher risk of being hospitalized with COVID-19
·         20 Times higher risk of dying from COVID-19

For more information, please go to:

Once again, I strongly urge everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated, including your school age children, and if you are already vaccinated, please get your booster when you are eligible.

I know this is not good news, but I hope that by working together, 2022 will be a better year than 2021.
