Recreation News April/May 2020   Even though our regularly scheduled spring programs are postponed at this time, we have some other fun and meaningful activities for you and your family to participate in.

Kindness Card Campaign   Would you and your family like to help out others that could really use some extra cheer?  Participate in the Recreation Department’s “Kindness Card” campaign for the Valerie Manor.  Nursing homes across the country have had to restrict their access to visitors to help stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.  This has left many of the residents feeling even more isolated.   Children, adults and families can participate by writing letters, sending encouraging cards, photos, coloring pages, art work and notes for the residents and drop them off in the white mailbox outside of Town Hall in a Manila Folder labeled-Cards for Valerie Manor from the Recreation Department.  Or you could mail them to Valerie Manor- 1360 Torringford St.  Torrington, CT 06790    Attention-Tracy Hoskins-Recreation   Please drop off the cards by Monday, June 1, 2020 at the mailbox in front of town hall in the manilla envelope.  Thank you so much!

Junior River Ranger Activity-Fun for the whole Family!  Are you looking for something fun to do with the family while practicing social distancing? The kids and you are ready to get outside and reset now that spring is finally here and the River and our area trails provide a great opportunity to help everyone cope with this difficult time. The FRCC River Steward Team and the Barkhamsted Recreation Department have partnered to bring you the Junior River Activity Booklets that are now available in the white mailbox outside of the Barkhamsted Town Hall in a Manilla Folder. Alternatively these can also be downloaded on line from this link- http://www.farmingtonriver.org/…/FR_Jr._River_Ranger_booklet…

Get some good exercise, while you and your family learn more about our beautiful Wild and Scenic Farmington River and what a resource it is for all of us. The booklet is loaded with enjoyable activities around the river. We are planning a special awards ceremony at the end of the summer for all those children and families that complete their booklets and all will be awarded with a special badge and treats. We will also be featuring photos and videos of the locations that the booklet highlights for those who are not able out during this time. If you and your family are completing your booklets and doing some of the activities, we encourage you to post your photos and videos on the Farmington River Steward Facebook page-https://www.facebook.com/FarmingtonRiverSteward

There is a new team of 'Assistant Stewards' for the summer of 2020.  The Stewards will continue to help spread the word about proper etiquette on the river and provide a presence during the busier times. There are some volunteer oppurtunities to help out and This could be a great learning experience for students majoring in environmental studies/conservation, or just someone who enjoys interacting with others to help.  If interested in learning more please contact-Stephan Bastrzycki-River Steward at mail@farmingtonriversteward.org      Please be sure to "Like" Farmington River Steward and the Farmington River Watershed on Facebook to stay up to date with events and programs.

Periodically there are river cleanups held on specific stretches of the river.  A few people volunteering a couple hours of their time can make a big difference.  Check our calendar of events on the home page of the Farmington River Steward website-http://farmingtonriversteward.org/  when the next cleanup become scheduled.

Consider 'adopting' a small stretch of river and help keep it clean.

If you do not want to actually commit to any hours, be our eyes on the river.  The next time you are out on the Farmington and see something that needs reporting, contact via email at mail@farmingtonriversteward.org    Maybe it is a downed tree creating a hazard in the water or an area of trash that needs to be cleaned up.   The Recreation Department and the FRCC River Steward Team put on many co-led activities throughout the summer and have booths at many of the local events.  Thanks for helping spread the message of #NoGlassNoTrash around our beautiful Wild and Scenic Farmington River area and in and around our Recreational trails and town!  Looking forward to seeing you at upcoming programs and out!
