I hope you can enjoy some of the weather when it’s not raining and have gotten a chance to look at the beautiful spring flowers.
Here are the meals for this week:
- LUNCH @ Noon – Tuesday, 5/2o/25 – baked stuff potatoes with all the fixings, salad, and cupcakes to celebrate the May birthdays.
- BREAKFAST – 7:30 am – 9:00 am – Thursday, 5/22/25 – Cooked to order - your choice of eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, pancakes, waffles, home fries, hash, fresh fruit, juices and more.
- As always, meals are $5.00 – additional donations are always welcome.
Under our every other week schedule, we will be closed this week (5/21). However, when the Balance course begins on Wednesday, May 28, we will be open every Wednesday for those participating in the course. This course has 8 weekly sessions starting at 1:00PM and lasting 2 hours each.
Thanks to the Town Highway Department and their cleanout of the weeds and ugly plants, we are in the process of sprucing up the front of the Senior and Community Center. The next step will be to plant appropriate flowers and shrubs and we are being guided by the Barkhamsted Garden and Book Club and will have some help from Praise Christian Church volunteers.
On June 21 from 12:00 PM to 8:00PM, a group of volunteers is holding River Rocks New Hartford at the Hurley Business Park to celebrate the Farmington River (
https://riverrocksnewhartford.com/). They are looking for volunteers (
https://riverrocksnewhartford.com/volunteers) or just want people to come out and enjoy a great day of live music from Connecticut musicians, along with activities for all ages. Come taste the local flavors provided by businesses & organizations in our area!
Here are the upcoming events and activities besides the meals and open house. Some of these have changed and some are new, so please read below to look at the dates that have been set. The flyers for most of these events are on the Town website, so please check there for more information (
https://www.barkhamsted.us/entities/senior-community-center).
- Tuesday, May 13 - Mark Perillo will be available after lunch, as he has been doing, to continue to help our folks with their computers, streaming, or tablet/phone problems. He is excellent and has helped several people with their issues.
- Tuesday, May 20 - we will have our Trivia night at 6:00PM. The first ones have been great successes, and we are hoping that more folks keep coming out for a fun evening with lots of laughter.
- Wednesday, May 28 - the Farmington Valley Health District will begin a course on helping seniors to improve their balance and to learn how to avoid falling. This will be an 8-week course, entitled "A Matter of Balance". It will be 2 hours each session, on Wednesdays from 1:00-3:00 and there is no charge for participating. So far, we have 20 folks who have signed up and the limit is 20 people. The sign-up sheet is on the table at the Center, and please let me know if you are interested in being on the wait list, so that if there slots open up, we can fill them.
- Friday, May 30 - the Traveling Trout will be back for their May jam session. They have shifted to 7:00PM so folks can have dinner before they come to listen, sing, dance and play. These have been very successful events, and we are grateful to the band members for their willingness to play at the Center. Please note that since the 23rd is the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, they decided to move to the 30th for this month.
- There will be a series of Garden Talks coming up on Tuesdays at 1:00PM. They are as follows:
- June 3: Ann Travers (who worked at White Flower farm as a botanical writer and is a long-time gardener) will demonstrate large container planting for sun or shade. She will bring pots, potting soil and plants so everyone who attends can take one home. There is a sign-up sheet at the Center so that we can have an accurate count. The maximum number will be 20.
-
- June 10 and 17: Orianne Barnowski will demonstrate flower arranging. This will be a presentation and a demo. During the second talk, participants will use in-season flowers to make an arrangement to take home.
-
- June 23: Bonnie Reynolds and Bonnie Boyle will show you how to preserve flowers and foliage by pressing and decorating.
Very important - if you who cannot drive to and from the Center, or if you know of anyone in that situation who would like to join us, please let me know and we will arrange rides as best we can. It's important that people not be housebound and that they have the opportunity to socialize.
That's it for today. I hope everyone has a good week.
