EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

 

The Town of Barkhamsted has an Emergency Management department that is headed by the Emergency Management Director (EMD). The EMD is appointed by the First Selectman and has the responsibility of coordinating and managing all of the emergency resources available to the town. This is typically needed in the event of a severe emergency incident or condition. A Deputy EMD is also appointed to assist the EMD and has the same responsibility in the absence of the EMD.

 

The Town of Barkhamsted is provided with fire protection by three volunteer fire departments that are under contract with the Barkhamsted Fire District (BFD). BFD collects property taxes separately from the town to fund this. The three departments are the Barkhamsted East Volunteer Fire Company, the Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Department and the Riverton Volunteer Fire Company.

 

The Town of Barkhamsted is provided with emergency medical services (EMS) by three agencies. These agencies are under contract with the town to provide EMS service which is  funded through tax revenue. The agencies are the New Hartford Volunteer Ambulance Association, the Winsted Area Ambulance Association and paramedic service from Hartford Healthcare.
